Freeze-Dried Raw Cat Food: Start With the Label

The familiar sound of a bag opening. A curious nose beside the bowl. Choosing your cat’s food is part of the relationship you build every day—and a few clear label checks can make that choice easier.

First, choose food made for cats

“Freeze-dried raw” describes a food format; it does not tell you whether a recipe meets your cat’s nutritional needs. Cats and dogs have different requirements. Is it a meal, a topper or a treat?

Look for a nutritional adequacy statement that identifies whether the food is complete and balanced and the life stage it covers. A treat or a food labeled for intermittent or supplemental feeding should not become your cat’s entire diet. The FDA explains how these statements distinguish a daily diet from extras. Understand “complete and balanced.”

If the package, species statement and product description do not agree, ask for clarification before using that recipe as the sole diet. A recipe ratio or an attractive ingredient photo cannot resolve a labeling question.

Read the whole recipe

Start with the ingredient list, then move to the Guaranteed Analysis and feeding information. Plan the daily bowl, then the delivery

• Use the recipe’s feeding guide as a starting point for the amount of dry freeze-dried food.
• Account for other food and treats in the day’s total.
• Estimate bags needed from your cat’s daily amount before choosing a subscription interval.
• Observe appetite, stool and body condition as a routine changes.
